Last Minute Costumes for Trick-or-Treat Time!

Wednesday, October 31st, 2018

It’s that spooky time of the year! It’s the night when ghosts and witches come out to play with princesses and cowboys. The night of jack-o-lanterns and fake spiders, and lots and lots of candy. While not really an Indian tradition, millennials the country over are lapping it right up, because what’s not to love about dressing up and partying it up with friends (and do we really want to fight such an easy excuse to do so?)

But, we’ll be honest, sometimes the day just sneaks up on us, and before you know it, bam! It’s the end of the work or school day, and you don’t have a costume ready. Oh, what to do? Well, don’t worry, we’ve got you convered. Here are some easy ideas for a last minute Halloween party!

Skeleton

One white t-shirt, and one black one. Oh, and a pair of scissors and the willingness to use them. But hey, last minute scrambles for a costume will send you down that path. Holy (Hole-y) costume!

Chip on Shoulder

If you’re the funny (or pun-ny) type, then this will be right up your alley. And bonus points because it literally just requires any t-shirt, a pack of chips, and some tape. Seriously, that’s it. And you’re guaranteed to get major eye rolls every time you tell people what your costume is. What fun!

Bank Robber

Super easy to do. All you need are black pants/jeans, a black and white striped top, a black beanie and a black mask (or just a black stocking with holes cut in for your eyes). Hands up!

Salt and Pepper

If you’re going as a couple, and don’t have a ready idea for either one of you, this one is ridiculously easy. And if you don’t have the fabric paint, don’t worry yourself. Just cut out the letters from black and white chart paper, and stick them on. Tada!

Ghost

This may be cliched, but it truly is in spirit (see what we did there?) with the theme of the night. All you need is an old, plain white bedsheet, and a pair of scissors, and you’re all set.

DIY of the Week – Gift Bags

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

The ‘Holiday Season’ is here and upon us in all its glory. Yes, with Garba in full swing, and Ravan knocking at our doors (only to be vanquished, poor lad), it is officially the season of lights, sweets, and yes, of course, gifts. And with family members, and friends, and co-workers to hunt up little knick-knacks for, wouldn’t be nice if you could find a pretty, but cheap way to jazz up your delivery of said gift? Well, don’t worry, over the next few weeks, we’ll help you out with some cool gift wrapping and presenting ideas that will be straight from the heart.

This week, we’re looking to make these pretty and vibrant gift bags. And the best part? You can make these in various sizes and colors, and well in advance (you can even start now), and just stick in the gift once you buy it, instead of painstakingly wrapping each individual item last minute. So let’s begin!

What you need:

1. Wrapping paper (we suggest using actual the paper sheets, not only are they sturdier than the plastic wrap ones, they’re also more eco-friendly)

2. Scissors

3. Tape or glue

4. Hole puncher

5. Ribbon or Jute string

What to do:

Step 1

Lay the decided size of paper design side down. Now fold in one side towards the center, and the fold the other side with a little overlapping on the first fold. Tape to hold in place as in the photo.

Step 2

Now fold over the bottom section. This is the part we will convert into our bag’s base.

Step 3

Separating the edges of the folded over bottom edge from the center, fold in the sides as shown in the photo below.

Step 4

Now take the protruding sections one at a time, and fold the first down towards the center line, folding the other one up, slightly overlaying it to strengthen grip. Tape along the joint.

Step 5

Open out the bag, and now fold inwards lightly the side sections (you might have seen these folds in all paper bags). These will help your bag maintain shape.

Step 6

Take the hole puncher and punch two equidistant holes for your handles in each of the wider top sections of your bag. Cut two lengths of ribbon or string to make your handles. Knot the end of one ribbon or string, pull it outwards from one hole and back into the other of the same side, knotting from the inside. Repeat on the other side.

And there you go! Your handmade gift bag is all ready!

Pro Tip:

You can make super kitschy looking bags by being creative with your choice of paper. You can use handmade or textured paper, your very own handmade marbled paper (remember how we learned how to here), jazz up plain paper with paints, washi tape, or bows, and even use the comic section of newspapers (looks real good too). It’s all up to your imagination!

Things You Need to Keep in Mind Before Getting a Pet

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

Pick out any Hollywood movie and the dream goal or the happy ending is about the perfect couple, with their perfect kids, in their perfect house, with their perfect pet. Sounds idyllic, we know. But while everyone thinks of kids as a huge responsibility that one has to prepare for mentally, physically, and financially, unfortunately, the same amount of thought doesn’t always go into getting a pet. It’s a sad truth that many pets end up in shelters, or even worse, on the streets, because their owners suddenly realize that having a dog or cat at home isn’t always an opportunity to make a quick video for YouTube. There’s a lot of time, money, love and care that go into caring for an animal, and we sincerely wish people thought it over sensibly before taking the plunge.

This is why we’ve compiled a checklist, if you must, of things you should consider before adopting or buying a pet for your home.

1. Motive

Let’s face it, you need to get real with yourself. What exactly is the main reason that you are considering to get a pet? Do you hate coming home to en empty house? Are your kids desperate for a pet? Do you want one to show off? Are you planning on getting one just because a friend’s pet had a litter? Whatever your reasons, you need to be able to be honest with yourself. Because a pet is as much responsibility as living with a small child, And if your motives are not strong and unwavering, chances are you might just change your mind by the end of the first few months.

Image source - We Heart It

Image source – We Heart It

2. Finances

Getting a pet, even if you don’t buy but rather adopt one, is expensive. Especially the first few months. Very expensive. You’ll have regular doctors visits, immunization shots, multivitamins, dog or cat food (even if you plan on feeding your pet home food, most vets will recommend packaged food for the first few months to ensure proper nutrition in their growing months). There will also be a basic set of supplies needing to be purchased like collars, leashes, hygiene products like soap, nail trimmers and grooming brushes, and litter fill and litter boxes for cats. The first two to three months will be the most expensive.

3. Time

A pet requires ample time. Whether it’s curling up with them in the evenings, grooming them, training them, taking them for walks, taking them to the vet, getting them exercise, it’s all in all a pretty big chunk of your day. And if you have a full load, are barely at home, and have to employ someone else to take care of their needs on a regular basis, you might have to rethink your availability to care for a pet in a way that will make him/her think that you’re really there for them.

4. Space

Let’s put it this way, if you live in a small space, where most of the floor space is taken up by your furniture, maybe a Great Dane isn’t the ideal pet for you. While we in no way believe that you need to live on a farmhouse to be able to have a pet, you have to take into account the space that is required for a full grown version of that cute little puppy you plan on carrying home. Animals get claustrophobic and depressed too, and if they feel that they don’t have enough space to move around in, it’s a given.

Image source - Homes Sold Beautifully

Image source – Homes Sold Beautifully

5. Research

We cannot stress this enough. It’s not enough to decide, for example, that you want a dog. You must research on breeds and compatibility with your individual situation. There are a lot of considerations that must be taken into account. Big dog vs small dog. Long hair vs short hair. Hound vs retriever. Do you have any other pets already? Do you have or are you planning on having children? Is there a park nearby for exercising? Every breed comes with its own set of pros and cons. Certain breeds have longer life spans than others, certain require much more training and exercise than others, certain need to be kept in cool areas. Even if you decide to adopt an indie or street dog, there are a lot of considerations. As there is with cat breeds as well. Each breed comes with its own temperament, potential health issues, and qualities. Research, research, research.

6. Patience

There will be horrible times. Guaranteed. Because life is messy, and so is family. And that’s what your pets become, family. You will have fruitless training sessions, your cat will urinate on the couch, your dog will chew your favorite pair of shoes. They will fall ill at times, and it will be emotionally harrowing. They will bark at strangers, and pull on their leash. They will scratch you when you try to pet them, or bathe them, or feed them, or just basically exist in the same universe (yes, cats can at times be pretty ruthless). But we promise that if you stick around through the tough times, the good times will be like no other. The love and comfort of a pet is an incomparable one. Just don’t forget, they need love and care in return.

*Disclaimer. We know, we went with the most obvious, and popular, choices for pet, i.e. dogs and cats, to illustrate our points. But the truth is even getting a goldfish requires care. You have to feed them everyday and you need to clean their tanks on a regular basis. Even a plant can’t be left to fend for itself. Please keep in mind that even if your pet (or the one you plan on getting) isn’t a dog or cat, don’t mistake it to mean that it doesn’t need affection, care, and attention. A life in your home can only prosper if you take the time and energy to care for it.

DIY of the Week – The Easiest Bird Feeder Ever!

Monday, October 8th, 2018

It’s Monday! And so, we’re back again with a brand new DIY project. This week, we’re going to learn how to make the easiest ever bird feeder in the history of DIY bird feeders ever! (OK, so we might be a little over enthusiastic about how easy this one is to make, but we’re not kidding about how easy it really is)

So, let’s get started then!

What you need:

1. Cardboard egg box

2. Scissors

3. Jute thread

4. Bird feed

Image source - Homemade Bird Food

Image source – Homemade Bird Food

What to do:

Step 1

Carefully cut the top half of the egg carton off, and proceed to make four small holes in each of the corners of the remaining bottom portion.

Step 2

Run the string through each of the four holes, leaving enough length to hang over a tree branch, and tie together at the top.

Step 3

Fill each egg compartment with the assorted bird seed.

Step 4

Head outside and hang your bird feeder. Ideal location would be on a tree branch, but if you don’t have a tree right near your house, you can even hang it in your balcony, or off the grill outside your kitchen window.

And there you go! See? We weren’t exaggerating about the simplicity of this project.

DIY of the Week – Upcycled Mobile Charger Holder (Method 2)

Monday, October 1st, 2018

And we’re back, as promised. Last week, we learned how to make an upcycled mobile charger holder from a plastic bottle. This week, we’re making one with the back pocket of your jeans! (Just maybe don’t try to wear them after the fact).

Not only does your charger no longer need to lie there on the floor while it charges, it also looks great while it charges. And now that old pair of jeans doesn’t need to hide in the back of your closet either, it can finally be put to work!

Method 2 – Denim Jeans’ Pocket

What you need:

1. Old Jeans

2. Scissors

3. Needle and Thread

What to do:

Step 1

Cut around the back pocket area of the jeans.

Now you need to make a hangar. To do that, you need to cut the side seam section of the leg of the jeans.
