Make It A Genuinely Happy Celebration for All

October 24th, 2019

With Diwali right around the corner, it is definitely time to celebrate. But while we celebrate, there is one component of the festivities that over the past few years has been seeing quite a bit of contention. Though thoughts of Diwali immediately bring to mind images of diyas, rangolis, sweets, gifts, and fairy lights, it also conjures the image of fireworks. But with each passing year, more and more people are foregoing this one aspect. Here’s a few of the reasons why:

1. Air Pollution

With the amount of smoke that various fireworks generate, this one reason is definitely at the top of the list. With growing awareness of how bad our air, especially in metro cities, is getting day by day, many people agree that by foregoing the yearly fireworks, it can make a huge difference.

2. Sound Pollution (especially for babies, the elderly, and animals)

Young children and animals both are sensitive, and have sensitive hearing. And most of all, they get tremendously scared with the loud noises. Though it’s purely a show of celebration, for them, it ends up being quite the opposite.

3. Garbage

The amount of litter that is spread across the roads the morning after Diwali is probably something you’ve been noticing for a while now, right? Especially if you were lucky (or unlucky) enough to have a sutli line or two set off in your gully. How about we try to keep our streets clean this time?

4. Accidents

We’ve all heard the horror stories over the years. The bombs that exploded while still in the hand, the clothes that caught fire from the fountain firework, the rocket that accidently went into someone’s house. Light a diya instead.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re not asking you not to celebrate. But maybe factor in the environment, kids, cleanliness, and safety into the picture, and then take a call?

We wish you and your loved ones a very happy and very safe Diwali.

DIY of the Week – Pistachio Shell Candle Holder

October 22nd, 2019

It’s celebration time, as the festival of lights is upon us! And we’ve figured out a great way to decorate your home, and the best part is – the main ingredient is pistachio shells! So all those dry fruit packets rolling in at home will actually serve to help you make this week’s pretty awesome (if we may say so ourselves) great DIY!

So why don’t you read on for the instructions while we go much on some more pista.

What You Need:

1. Pistachio shells (the more, the merrier)

2. Hot glue gun

3. Spray paint or acrylic paint

4. Piece of cardboard for base, or an old CD

5. Tealight candles

What To Do:

Step 1

If you’re using a CD for the base, then great, otherwise cut out a circular piece of cardboard to stick the shells onto. Find the center of your base and trace out the tealight candle size so that you can make the right size frame for it.

Step 2

Prep your pistachio shells by making sure to remove all flakes from inside. Ensure there are no broken or ill-shaped pieces.

Step 3

Now comes the most important part. Start with tracing the inner circle (tealight candle outline) with the hot glue, but ensure you only take 2 inches or so at a time, as the glue dries and sets pretty quick. Stand pistachio shells in the glue, with a slightly outward angle and move along, forming a border to the previously marked circle.

Step 4

Now start with the second circle, exactly behind the already placed shells. For the second line, place shells in such a fashion that the shell covers the space between two shells in front of it, creating an alternating pattern. They might not all lineup, so don’t worry about it. Just keep creating tight concentric circles. Keep doing this for as many rounds as necessary to reach the end of the base piece.

Step 5

Once you reach the last line, turn the base over and lightly put a round of glue between the edge and the last circle, for extra fastening.

Step 6

Once the glue is nice and dry, spray paint over the whole thing. If you don’t have spray paint, you can use regular acrylic paints with a brush as well.

Step 7 (Optional)

For extra shine and a longer lasting candle holder, go over the finished and dry piece with a coat of varnish.

Step 8

Now all you have to do is place the candle in the middle and light it!

pista finish

Love and light to you all! Happy Diwali!

Playlist of the Week – Best of The Beatles

October 11th, 2019

If your initiation into English music did not include the Beatles, you definitely need to change that now. Considered one of the most influential music groups of all time, the four-member Beatles changed the landscape of music, becoming more and more popular with each new release. Here are some of our favourites, to help you take a walk down memory lane.

1. Hey Jude

Do we need to say anything else? Na na na na na na na na na!

Hey Jude

2. Yesterday

Possibly one of the most haunting set of lyrics.

Yesterday

3. Come Together

Time to get united!

4. Strawberry Fields Forever

Forever and ever.

5. Let It Be

Whispering words of wisdom to us always.

Playlist of the Week – Best of Nirvana

October 4th, 2019

Every once in a while, nostalgia will strike hard, and you will head back into your memories (sometimes fond, sometimes not). And one thing that is indisputable is that nothing brings a memory into sharp focus as much as a song. Sometimes a memory attached to a particular song is so strong that hearing just a few notes can give you a surreal sense of deja vu.

To commemorate those old beloved memories, we’re taking a trip down memory lane with a band that defined grunge for so many. Here’s our pick for our most loved Nirvana tracks.

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit

The quintessential Nirvana song. Probably their most popular track, it pretty much defined an entire generation.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

2. Lithium

I’m so ugly, that’s ok cuz so are you.

Lithium

3. The Man Who Sold The World

It may be a cover, but man was it one heck of a tribute to the original!

The Man Who Sold the World

4. Lake of Fire

If you didn’t croak along to this one, you weren’t really a Cobain fan. Please note, the key word here is croak.

Lake of Fire

5. Come As You Are

A known enemy.

Come As You Are

6. Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Because we couldn’t figure out which song to leave out of the list.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Have a great week!

DIY of the Week – No Sew T-Shirt Tote Bag

September 30th, 2019

We’re back to start your week with another little dose of (very practical) creativity. And it’s perfect for all the festival shopping that is waiting for you just around the corner! This week we’re making tote bags out of old t-shirts, and the best part is, you don’t have to sew at all!! They’re the easiest thing to make, and oh-so practical! Let’s get snipping!

What You Need:

1. Old T-Shirt (thicker fabric will ensure a sturdier bag)

2. Fabric scissors

3. Washable marker (optional)

What To Do:

Step 1

Cut off the sleeves. To ensure that both sides are aligned you can do this one of two ways. You can either fold the tee vertically and cut both the sleeves simultaneously, or you can cut one side, then fold the tee vertically and use the cut sleeve section as a marker as you cut the other side.

Step 2

Now you need to cut the neckline area. You can use a large bowl or container to mark it so that you cut neatly. (Don’t forget to turn the tee inside out if you are doing any marking).

Step 3

Now’s the time to mark our desired depth for the bag. This requires you to turn the tee inside out (if you haven’t already). Depending on where you want the bottom of the bag to be, trace out a straight line across the width of the tee. Don’t forget that most fabrics will stretch with the weight of whatever you keep in the bag, so it will probably get a bit longer than wherever you mark it.

Step 4

Finally time for some fringe benefits! To make the bottom fringe section, cut slits from the bottom up to the line you’ve marked. Ideally, you can make these about one inch width each. Make sure to cut both the front and back sides of the tee simultaneously.

Step 5

Now it’s time to tie it up. This is a two step part, and though it might sound a bit complicated, it’s actually quite easy. Firstly, you have to tie the front and back sections of each fringe section you just cut.

Step 6

Once all the front and back sections are all tied up, we move on to the second part of the fringe section, where will use one strand each from each of the already paired up fringe sections we’ve just made. Take one strand from the second-from-the-left pairs, and tie it with one of the left most pairs’ strands. Then take the second strand and tie it with one of the strands from the third pair. You should have the 1st and 2nd sets tied up to each other, and the 2nd and 3rd tied to each other now. Now taking the other strand from the 3rd pair, tie it to one of the strands from the 4th pair, and keep going down the line all the way to the other end of the tee.

Et voila! You’re ready to hit the stores! And in super eco-friendly style.
