The Benefits of Decluttering

“The more things you own, the more they own you.”

While we’ve always been counselled to keep our living and working spaces clean (think back to your mom yelling at you to clean your room), most people don’t think about the co-relation of a clean space with a clean and clear mindset. But this co-relation has not only been studied and well established, it has also sparked a movement called minimalism (which we admit, is a teensy bit extreme for us, and not exactly possible and practical for everyone), but it does bring to focus the benefits of the ‘less is more’ concept of thinking and living.

To put it simply, decluttering is the conscious act of removing all necessary physical assets that are of no use to you any longer. Though each practitioner and advocate of the practice will vary a little in how they describe it, most will give you a time frame (like a year or two) and ask you to either throw away or donate anything that hasn’t been used by you in that duration. For example, open your cupboard and remove all items of clothing that you have not worn even once in the past one year.

But is decluttering really all it’s cracked up to be, or is it just another passing fad? Well, we present a list of supposed benefits to de-cluttering your life, to make it easier for you to decide.


1. It makes you more confident in your own abilities

The more organized your living or workspace, the more confident you feel in your organization skills. Because let’s face it, opening your eyes each morning to that giant pile of clothes on that chair, or walking into your office with a cluttered desk being the first thing you see, isn’t exactly a great way to get a boost of confidence.

2. It reduces anxiety

The more clutter you see, the more guilty you feel for not having sorted it, and fantastic news, the more anxious you feel because of the pressure you’ve now created thanks to all that guilt. It’s a never ending cycle. Best way to clear your mind? Clear that desk!

3. It leads to mindful purchasing

Since decluttering requires you to not only dispose of things you aren’t using, it also requires that you pay attention new purchases, which in turns leads you to be more mindful in your purchasing habits. This means that you actively consider the longevity of use for any product you purchase, whether it is a piece for your home, and item of clothing, or even work equipment.

4. It helps you find things more easily

So simple! The less items you have, the less likely something will get misplaced amongst a giant pile. No more emptying the entire cupboard to find your favorite shirt, and opening all the kitchen drawers to find that pizza cutter. Since you’re only keeping the bare minimum stuff, you can now find things in a jiffy.

5. It leads to better sleep

Though there are plenty of studies that show that a less cluttered space allows for positive energy to flow without obstruction, if you aren’t one to believe ‘such’ things, it doesn’t matter. A cleaner home leaves less room for guilt in your mind. Guilt of leaving that mess in the hall, that pile of papers on your desk, that pile of dishes in the sink. The cleaner your home, the more satisfied you feel turning in for the day, the better your sleep.

6. It’s easier to let go of the past

We often end up holding onto things as physical reminders of long held memories. And this often leads to our inability to let ‘things’ go. But once you purge the excess physical items, you often find yourself feeling mentally lighter too. People have often expressed the feeling of letting go of the past, and being able to focus more not only on their present, but the future too.

7. It reduces stress in relationships

A cramped and cluttered home often leads to a cluttered mind as well, and the first victim is often our relationships, whether with our significant other, our parents or siblings, or even our coworkers. Flustered feelings resulting from an overflowing desk or an untidy home often manifest in our dealings with people that co-exist with us in those very spaces, and freeing up the excess and unused allows for the same in our feelings too.

8. It saves on storage space

The less items you have, the less you have to worry about stuffing them in some random drawer or cabinet, just to get them out of the way. It becomes possible not only to find space to store everything you own, but also becomes easier to organize it, since you’re no longer stuck in the otherwise never ending struggle to find that itty bitty space for that extra pair of shoes, or that third guitar, or that 47th stuffed toy (hey, we don’t judge).

9. It increases creativity and productivity

Instead of constantly worrying about where you’re going to put the new project file so it doesn’t get mixed up with the old ones, or why you now have three places where you’re keeping linen, you now can focus on better things. Since decluttering frees up both space and time, you automatically have more time on your hands to not only be more organized, but more productive too.

10. It leads to a cleaner household/office

And it’s so much easier (and faster) to keep clean! Instead of dusting 67 little knick knacks, many of which were gifts some twenty years ago and you don’t even remember who gave them, you now can just wipe down empty coffee tables, and display cabinets that have only the really special items now. Think of all the things you can do with all that extra time! And an added benefit is that your health will get an extra boost, since you won’t dread cleaning as a never-ending task, and therefore you’ll probably do it more often and more diligently.

‘Work’ing Towards A Healthier You!

While being stuck in an office cubicle all day does good things for your bank account, it really does end up wreaking havoc on your body. Eye strain from continuous screen time, posture and back issues from staying in the same positions for long durations, and lethargy and drop in energy from a sedentary lifestyle are some of the obvious issues, but stick at it long enough and you’ll end up facing more serious health issues down the line, both physical as well as mental.

So how do you break out of this cycle? Do you just quit your job? Wait, is that even an option? No, no, hold it right there. We’re not asking you to quit your job, or change your career. We’re here to share some tips and tricks to help you bring small changes in your daily routine to minimize all these problems. And you can do them right there, in the office itself!


1. Take a walk

This one’s pretty easy to do. Just get off your chair and take a small walk around the office. If you do this every hour or two, it gives your back a chance to stretch, gets some blood flowing, and also freshens your mind a bit.

2. Rest your eyes

This is something you should definitely do every hour,  on the hour. Especially if your work requires you to be practically glued to your computer or laptop throughout the day. The blue and bright light emitted from screens, especially for prolonged periods, causes eye strain. If you don’t take care, this can lead to vision problems, headaches, and general unease. Also, invest in a pair of anti-glare eyeglasses. You can get these from any optician, even if you have 20-20 vision. And for an added break, a cool eye mask on your eyes for 20 minutes before bed does wonders too. (You can use used and drained tea bags kept in the fridge for this too).

3. Light stretching

Even if you can’t do this at regular intervals, do try to at least thrice in the day, ideally when you reach the office, at the start of your lunch break, and before you go home for the day. This could be whatever you’re comfortable doing, whether a few full body stretches, or some simple yoga poses that don’t require a mat or too much space. And if you feel awkward doing so in an office space, try to rope in some colleagues to do it with you. Not only will make it less awkward, you’ll also be able to motivate and remind each other to follow through every day.

4. Drink up

Your parents told you, your teachers told you, Google told you, and they’re all right! Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. We cannot stress the importance of this enough. Getting caught up in your work and simply forgetting to drink water has happened to the best of us, so how do you avoid falling into that trap? Keep a bottle of water on your desk at all times (don’t forget to refill it!).  Another great tip? There are a bunch of apps available for your phone that remind you to drink a glass of water throughout the day. Talk about technology saving the day!

5. Smile

Yup, you read it right. Studies have shown that if you smile, whether you’re in a good mood or not, you can actually trick your mind into releasing endorphins (the happy hormones), and then you genuinely are in a good mood. And we don’t need to tell you that the happier you are, the better, right?

6. Take the stairs

Not only is this great advice for your health, but it’s great for the environment too. And don’t worry, if you work on the 20th floor, don’t overdo it either. Take the lift to 15th floor, and then take the stairs. (We’re not averse to a little cheating as long as you put in some work). Don’t work in a high rise, or just plain work on the ground floor? Well, you know those three-four steps at the entryway, just go up and down those at quick speeds about 4-5 times before heading in, and before heading out. Extra points for doing it at lunch time too!

Oh, and just in case you don’t work in an office, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing these things too. Whether you’re a student, someone who works from home, a freelancer, it doesn’t matter. We can all benefit from healthier bodies and minds. And it’s never too early or too late to start.

Get Creative, Get Fit: Yoga to Boost Creativity

On the 21st of June, the world commemorated two activities that have been enriching the quality of life since their discovery – the creation of music and Yoga. Both activities have been around for ages and both have a kind of therapeutic effect on the practitioner/listener. Good music instantly puts us in a better mood while Yoga calms the mind, improves health and thereby makes us healthier and happier individuals. It’s only fair then to have a day dedicated to both these activities, so that people are reminded about the benefits we derive from them and thus, the need to frequently do both – practice Yoga and play/listen to music. Setting up a good playlist is easy, but finding the right asanas to practice can be a little tricky. Since we’re all about the arts and creativity, here are a couple of asanas that are said to boost creativity. Practice these asanas to get those bright ideas whizzing around in the upper story!

Balasana (Child’s Pose)

Difficulty Level: Easy

A child’s world is always full of wonder. Their imaginations are fertile and when left on their own, they create dragons and aliens and elaborate tea parties in their heads. As we grow up, there’s so much that’s added to our plates that we rarely get time to think up these fantasies any more. This asana gives you a chance to once again retreat into a world of calm where you can focus on your breathing and thoughts. It also helps you stretch your back so that you feel relaxed and capable of thinking creatively.

Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose)

Difficulty Level: Medium

Balance is important in life, for only then will your mind be able to think calmly and creatively. This asana requires for your body to maintain perfect balance for only then will you be able to hold the pose. It also strengths and stretches your muscles, making your body strong and flexible. The asana opens the hip and chest regions, which are believed to be centres of creativity.

Shirshasana (Headstand)

Difficulty Level: Advanced

We are able to think creatively when we begin to see things from a different perspective. The Shirshasana teaches us this in a beautiful way. Not only does it show us the world from a different angle, it also makes us focus on our balance and breathing. Plus, by holding your body headfirst, blood and oxygen rush to the brain, revitalizing brain cells.
